History abounds in Florence; it was one of the most wealthy cities of Medieval Europe and is considered to be the birthplace of the Renaissance resulting in it sometimes being referred to as, “The Athens of the Middle Ages”. For a short period between 1865 and 1871, Florence became the Capital City of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy.

Florence was the base for the Medici family dynasty who were renowned for their vast wealth which originally emanated from the textile trade but was largely accumulated through banking. They became politically powerful within the region and created an environment where art and humanism could flourish. The family also provided three Popes of the Roman Catholic Church.

Visit the San Lorenzo Market and you will never go hungry. Choose from bistecca alla fiorentina at Trattoria Le Mossacce and a panino al lampredotto (stewed tripe sandwich) if you are adventurous.

Couple that with the the David reproduction in the Palazzo Vecchio and you are sure to see one of Florence’s delights.

If all that is not for you, why not check out the Gucci Museum—home to the complete archive of iconic Gucci products, from loafers to luggage, or if that doesn’t float your boat, why not visit Pineider for some of the best paper products in the world.
