Romania Overview

The country of Romania is based in the southeast of Europe and is known for the forested region of Transylvania which is ringed by the Carpathian Mountains.

Dracula

This region is perhaps best known as the home of fictional character Dracula who was created in 1897 by Bram Stokers, an London-based Irish Author and Manager of the Lyceum Theatre. He based his novel of that name on traditional folk stories he learnt from Ármin Vámbéry, a Hungarian writer and traveller, who told him of dark stories of the Carpathian mountains.

Stoker then spent several years researching European folklore and mythological stories of vampires as well as spending time researching the region.

Preserved Medieval Towns

Romania has many preserved medieval towns including Sighişoara, and Brasov. There are many fortified churches and castles, notably the clifftop Bran Castle which is long associated with the Dracula legend.

Bucharest, the country’s capital, is the site of the gigantic, Communist-era Palatul Parlamentului government building which is believed to be the biggest parliament building in the world.
